Singer/songwriter Amaru has been on our minds for a while. Her acoustic-soul vibe leaves heart racing, because many times she sings about the things that you might be thinking about saying but you don’t have the guts to. If you don’t know her for her music then you probably seen an ethereal being with every colour on the rainbow in her braids. It’s a free fun look follows her everywhere she goes, and it’s a shock that her music isn’t everywhere in Uganda.

In this short documentary from New York City based cinematographer Derek Mindler, singer-songwriter Amaru discusses coming to New York City from Uganda, the challenges and hardships she faced and the great things about living, performing and studying in the City. Joanna Amaru is a student at St. John's University in Queens, New York, and performs her original music all around Queens.

‘Amaru’ whose name means “I love” (in Alur) and ‘I have loved” (in Luo) is a Ugandan Born Singer and Songwriter currently based in New York City.

Born into a musical family where she was fathered by a very gifted singer and instrumentalist and mothered by a singer, she fell in love with Music at a very tender age.

One on One with Amaru

Joanna Amaru won the Best Female and Best Newcomer accolades in Friday’s Club Music Video Awards. Emmy Omongin, talked to the New York based artiste.

Congratulations? How did you feel when you got news that you had garnered 2 CMVAs for the categories, Best Female Video of the Year and Best New Comer? Did you think you would win amidst tight competition from well known artistes as compared to you?
The six nominations for me, were the actual victory! I was not expecting that, and it was a true honour and very humbling for me! It said a lot to me as an artiste, that I was doing something right, and pushed me to even work harder. The wins were just the icing on the cake.

Singer-songwriter Amaru dropped Heartbeat, a gentle acoustic ballad, early in June this year. Amaru, whose earlier releases Stay and Dance My Pain Away have earned her six nominations at the Club Music Awards, is not one to shirk from trying to use different approaches to her music.
